Raiders Moving To Vegas - Sports Betting and The NFL

March 27, 2017 - The Oakland Raiders are attempting to move to Las Vegas, Nevada and that decision will come down to a 2/3’s vote among the NFL owners on Monday, March 27th. Some reports and a not so subtle quote from an NFL owner have made it pretty clear that the Oakland Raiders will be the Las Vegas Raiders pretty soon. The quote came from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as he walked into the NFL’s annual league meeting on Sunday. After being asked about the potential move, Jerry Jones said: “that’s tomorrow, but it will be an exciting day for Las Vegas”. There have been rumors that the Raiders have rented out Thomas Mack Center, which is located on the campus of the University of Nevada. This could possibly be the site for a potential celebration for the move to Las Vegas.

NFL Owners Vote 31-to-1 In Favor Of Raiders Move To Las Vegas

Raiders New StadiumWith Miami being the only vote against the move it looks like the Davis family is taking its ball and moving homes. When Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was asked why he voted against the move he said “My position today was that we as owners and as a League owe it to the fans to do everything we can to stay in the communities that have supported us until all options have been exhausted". While most fans appreciate an owner standing with them the Oakland faithful take no solace in a single hollow voice. And while most Raiders fans don't want to hear it the Chargers may very well be their best chance at a NFL team in the future.

And according to Oakland mayor Libby Schaff the Bay Area didn't get a fair shake saying today “Never that we know of has the NFL voted to displace a team from its established market when there is a fully financed option before them with all the issues addressed,” ... she went on to add “I’d be remiss if I didn’t do everything in my power to make the case for Oakland up until the very end.”

Sports Betting And The NFL

With all of these rumors circulating about the Raiders making this move now being fact, it’s easy to surmise that there apparently isn’t a huge concern as far as the fact that sports gambling is legal in Las Vegas. One NFL owner touched on the lack of concern saying that the gambling availability in Vegas is no different than just pulling your phone out of your pocket and betting from that. In fact, that seems to be the consensus amongst NFL owners and personnel. And he has a great point. The NFL’s Thoughts On Sports Betting

Ever since these rumblings about an NFL franchise moving to Las Vegas, the NFL, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell have been adamant about not wanted gambling in the league. The NFL’s thoughts on sports betting can be taken as fact because it is their official stance that they are against it, but as the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words and only time will tell.

The other issue being discussed now is whether or not the NFL will try to prevent sportsbooks from accepting bets on the Raiders. Even though the American Gaming Association argues that legalizing sports gambling would be a good thing for the integrity of the NFL, the league has still not given any indication of bending on the issue. That being said, if the NFL does allow sportsbooks to bet on the Raiders, that will actually be a pretty significant step for progress.

David Payne Purdum, a writer for ESPN chalk, tweeted “If NFL requests that betting is prohibited on Vegas Raiders at Nevada books, it would include all games, home or away, even the Super Bowl.” If the league says Vegas should not take bets on the Raiders, then the sports betting industry would lose the steam it has been gaining for years.
